Hitchhiker’s Guide To Kedarnath 2

Hitchhiker’s Guide to Kedarnath 2

Day 6 Started with early morning bus to Sonprayag , where I reached around 9:30 a.m. On the bus, I made another friend from Gurugram with whom I travelled for next 2 days. After breakfast , due to my experience in Gangotri I left my luggage in clock room and moved on.We took a transport from there to Gauri kund, from where we needed to start the trek. Gauri Kund is also the place where we have hot water spring like Badrinath. Pilgrims will take bath there before starting the trek of 16kms.

We started the trek around 10:30 a.m. After an hour of trek , I decided to hire a pony and my friend continued the trekking. After getting down from the pony around 2.30 p.m., there is a walk of around 1.5 kms to reach the temple.

After taking the room and fresh up , as the darshan is closed from 3-5 p.m. I went to the darshan around 5 p.m.

Till 3 pm visitors can touch the idol and do abhishek with ghee whereas after 5 p.m., no one can touch the idol but can get darshan from a distance. At this time, the idol is in Emperor costume . After spending some time ,I received my friend who reached there by trek.

After that we went to the evening aarti of Kedarnath and my friend went for the darshan after aarti and I went to the room . After dinner we retired to bed. Again, I was at 3,583 m (11,755 ft) height and in -ve temperature so I haven’t got much sleep for the night.

Day 7  The weather is magical with clear skies and we had a  beautiful view of the temple with white mountains in the background .We went to Darshan around 8 a.m. and did the abhishek to Bolenath . After that we started the trek down around 10 a.m.,I had a bit of luggage and my friend had a bit of cramps due to the trek the day before so, we took number  of breaks. We climbed down at a slow pace as we were planning to go down by dinner and start the journey next day morning only.

After having lunch on the way and multiple breaks, we reached down around 6 p.m. For the trek down itself is very exhausting for me and trekking up would be very tough.

From what I see , the most preferred way to go up is the helicopter ride.It will cost 7k generally but in the off season , they are charging as low as 3k ,if you go there directly and I see most number of pilgrims taking this mode of transportation.

Second best is pony , but not very suitable to elderly persons as I have seen many elderly  people struggling. This will cost 2300 around in the peak season but you should get it for 1k or so in off season. If you are going with trek , you should start very early and keep very less baggage to carry.

From Gaurikund we took transport to Sonprayag . After dinner I booked the tickets for next day early morning bus to Haridwar. Buses here are mostly full so its advisable to book the tickets in advance. We took room and stayed there for the night.

Day 8 I travelled to Haridwar from Sonprayag for almost full day and reached there around 4:30 p.m. After checking into the hotel room, I went to evening Ganga aarti at Har ki Pauri which starts at 6 p.m. I have done some shopping in the famous shopping streets at Har ki Pauri .
